Description

When we tell you that Saint-Étienne is a town of sports lovers, you'd better believe it! Yes, Saint-Étienne has been selected to host the Rugby World Cup (RWC) 2023 or the Coupe du Monde de Rugby, as we call it here.

To host these matches, what better than a legendary stadium: the Geoffroy-Guichard Stadium, otherwise known locally as the Cauldron.
But actually, just what matches are we talking about? Here are the teams - and not just any old teams! - that will be striding out onto the pitch at the legendary Geoffroy-Guichard stadium:

•Italy, also known as the Squadra Azzurra. Our European neighbours will face the Namibia national team on 9 September 2023
•Australia, nicknamed the Wallabies, a team with one of the best track records in the world. No less! And they'll be coming to us twice during this Rugby World Cup. Two dates to remember then: 17 September for Australia-Fiji and Sunday 1 October for Australia against the winner of the Final Qualification Tournament.
•Fiji or The Flying Fijians as they like to call themselves on their home patch. They're sure to have the Cauldron bubbling when they meet Australia on 17 September
•Argentina, known as the Pumas. Like Australia, Argentina is one of the best national teams in the world, particularly since 2000. To see them perform at Geoffroy-Guichard stadium, note this date: Friday 22 September, when they will face Samoa.
•The Samoan islands and their team the Manu Samoa (reportedly named after an old Samoan chief) will be coming to visit us on 22 September. Over there, rugby is THE inescapable sport with no less than 15,000 players for a population of 175,000!
* Portugal Os Lobos ("The Wolves", in French) secured their qualification ticket for the competition after two wins over Hong Kong and Kenya and a thrilling final match against the USA in the Final Qualifying Tournament. Portugal is the ninth European team to qualify for the 2023 Rugby World Cup.
