The demeure Chamoncel, what a (hi)story
To see Sainté’s origins, no need for the Tardis (sorry Doctor!).
In the oldest part of Sainté there’s a little treasure, not far from the impressive Grand’Église. This is the Demeure Chamoncel, Maison du Patrimoine et des Lettres (the name says it all: the “house of heritage and letters”). Half-timbering, mullioned windows, stone carvings: you get the picture, the original photogenic building! Of course this 16th century house, which belonged to a brilliant merchant, named – you guessed it – Chamoncel, is a listed Historic Monument. Inside, it’s the ultimate time-travel experience: vaulted passages, spiral staircases… It’s almost like you were there, and in fact you do get to meet some characters from the time, who have some stories to tell about Sainté (with the help of some augmented reality). A trip back in time focused on literary works. There are even story-telling sessions and workshops to complete the experience. Our tip? Visit with a Ville d’Art & d’Histoire guide to discover all the building’s secrets.
